Hughenden Jockey Club was first formed in 1881, President of club was C.N Armitage of Afton Downs, Vice Presidents R.W Moran and M.M Chisholm

The Hughenden Bracelet established in 1884 on Tuesday 17th June. The meet went for 3 days and races included hurdles. The Hughenden Bracelet was the Melbourne Cup of the West. Credit For starting the Bracelet idea is Given to Messes W. Bartlem and Bob Crothers, and it is claimed the Hughenden Bracelet was the first to be included on any race Programme in Australia.

Outside of Charters Towers and Townsville the most important Racing centre was Hughenden in the mid-west.
The north-west had some fine Sportsmen in the early days. The Ramsay brothers, Tom, Bob and Harry Crothers, Charlie Beel, nor- Man Armytage and Billy Carter are only a few of the sterling sporting squatters who supported the sport of kings in the Flinders River country.
